Yegane Moghaddam

Yegane Moghaddam is an Iranian animator and illustrator, who has a passion from nature and culture. Her short film "Our Uniform" was nominated for an Oscar in 2024. The film was about how wearing a Hijab in school was mandatory, and it was being imposed on young girls.

She is now an active member of the Academy of motion pictures and arts and sciences.

Yegane's film "Our Uniform" is a documentary animated film about the uniforms of young girls, and how schools in Iran would force girls to wear Hijabs. The main aesthetics of the film was the use of the hijab school uniform's fabric itself. The fabric wrinkled and folded added a narrative impact to the film, which made this film unique.

Because the film was animated directly on cloth, it relied on static, eye level framing, and no dynamic camera angles. The simplicity of the camera angles is what made Yegane able to play with the aesthetic of each shot.

The film was a mix of 2D animation and stop motion. When attempting only stop motion, she realized that the process was not working, and through trial and error, she realized that overlaying 2D animation on top of stop motion was more practical in her film. All of the illustrations she did were 2D, in color pencil, so it looked like it was directly drawn on the piece of clothing.

Reflection
What struck out the most about her film, was the way she was telling the story so impactfully.
